Freshening Up Tricks To Sell Your Home Fast

As Sarah Beeny, George Clarke or Kirsty and Phil will tell you, people make up their minds about whether they want to buy your house very fast indeed. It takes just a quick glance around your lounge, a snoop in your kitchen and a meander upstairs and they’re able to give the yes or no. In fact, in this age of online property searches, some buyers will disregard your house from the online pictures alone. If you want to sell your home fast, we’ve got some freshening up tricks to help.

1. Declutter and depersonalise. Your home is a reflection of you and your family and is, of course, filled with all of the bits and pieces that make up your life. If there’s too much clutter though, this can make it hard for prospective viewers to see past the mess and to the features of the house. Personal touches that show off the personality of the house are nice, but piles of stuff that restrict a viewer’s ability to move freely around the house aren’t. Use storage boxes to pack away anything unnecessary (they’ll come in handy when it comes to moving house too).

2. Clean the cupboards. Why is it that property hunters feel the need to open every single wardrobe and storage cupboard? It could be that they genuinely think there could be another room inside, it could be that they’re mentally measuring up if their clothes would fit, but whatever the reason, you don’t want viewers to be greeted by a mountain of your junk do you? Give the whole house a good top to bottom cleaning; that includes and wardrobes and cupboards that could potentially be opened. These storage bags could come in handy for additional clothes storage.

3. Fix the faults. As a prospective buyer walks around your home, they’re mentally totting up how much it’ll cost to put right the ‘faults’. Buyers will also tend to overestimate how much it would cost to undertake DIY, and then take this off the price they will offer for your home. If you know there are small DIY jobs that need completing, then try and get them done before listing your home, it’ll often save you money in the long term and lead to a faster sale.

4. Prep for the pictures. The all-important pictures of your home are the ones that’ll make it onto Right Move or Zoopla and (hopefully) encourage lots of viewings for your home. Invest the time in prepping your home so the estate agent can take the best possible pictures. This might mean selecting just the pieces of furniture that best showcase or suit the space and storing other pieces. Try and step back and look at your home critically; what draws your eye, does it look appealing to your target market be that a family looking for space, a single person just getting onto the property ladder or a couple seeking a cosy retreat?

5. Garden grooming. We’ve all heard of kerb appeal, and there’s a lot you can do to make your home look enticing from the outside. Cut the grass, do some weeding, add some potted plants and give any fences or doors that need it a fresh lick of paint. If you can get prospective buyers over the threshold then you have at least got the opportunity of selling them your organised, de-cluttered and all round gorgeous interior. And before you know it, you’ll be moving into a brand new home yourself!
